Heaven gave me talent, so it will one day be recognised.
This line, by the Chinese poet Li Bai, was on my birth announcement. My parents knew that a life with a disability would bring challenges. But also that I’d have talent and resilience. Not despite, but because of.
They named me Kemai, which means “able to move forward” in Chinese. A name that connects me to my multicultural background. And that reminds me I can become who I want to be.
Who I want to be
The meaning of my name touches the core of who I am. Who I want to be.
- Someone who knows talent isn’t one-dimensional, but comes in many forms.
- Someone who knows that different norms and values are an enrichment, even when that creates discomfort.
- Someone who knows curiosity is the most important condition for growth.
- And that it’s precisely the combination of my disability and my multicultural background that helps me connect with others and broaden the norm together, so everyone can put their talent to use.
Everyone has talent. But not every talent gets seen. That’s the bigger goal I want to contribute to. First as a professional in the corporate world, now with Kemai Coaching.
